Chapter 1 The Letter on the Table In the church fellowship hall, sunlight resting on worn floorboards surrounded James and Kimberly as they faced the truth of the day. A bank notice arrives as James and Kimberly prepare for church. James wrote the need on a scrap of paper, careful not to turn concern into command. Kimberly watched him with the patient honesty of someone who knew both his strength and the places where strength became a hiding place. The problem still looked larger each time they named it, and every practical answer seemed to open into another question. “Then we will offer it together,” Kimberly replied. “Little does not mean useless in God’s hands.” The words did not erase the figures, repair the damage, or silence every accusation. They did something quieter: they made room for truth without surrendering to it. Could obedience still matter when the outcome was hidden? Kimberly thought again of Matthew 17:20 and the mustard seed—not impressive to the eye, but alive with a future concealed inside it. They listed what could be done before nightfall. One call. One apology. One form completed. One neighbor visited. Yet the smallest kindness of the day kept despair from having the final word. James noticed how often he had waited to feel fearless before acting. Kimberly reminded him that faithfulness could tremble and still move forward. Together they chose a task small enough to finish and meaningful enough to matter. By evening, nothing looked completely solved. Still, something had shifted between them. They prayed without performance: for wisdom, provision, mercy, and courage for the next step. When they said amen, the mountain remained in view, but it no longer stood between them. They stood side by side, and the seed of faith had been placed once more into the ground.
